Cottage on Cabot

We were so honored to have this recent design project featured in the latest issue of Cottages & Bungalows magazine!

Cottage on Cabot is actually the home of top Pineapple Girl, Lisa Peterson. She is an interior designer and the co-owner of Pineapples, Palms, Etc.

Lisa has always dreamed of living in a comfortable, relaxed, Florida Cracker style cottage, with views and breezes from the water that create her “Barefoot Dream” lifestyle.

“Cottage on Cabot” was built with the true Florida Cracker architecture of the past, and blends perfectly with its historic surroundings. Cracker architecture was used widely in the 19th century in Florida. Florida cracker homes are characterized by metal roofs, wrap around porches, long and straight central hallways from the front to the back of the home. Peterson loved this concept so she incorporated many windows and doors that open onto the large deck, allowing the constant ocean breeze to fill the house.

Here is the layout from Cottages and Bungalows. They did such a beautiful job!

Shelf Candy

The right styling for shelving in your home can make a big difference in creating a space that feels complete. Balance and placement are important, but you should also consider using your personal collections that are meaningful to you. Displaying family photos in frames will help personalize your look.
We like using books, boxes, coral, picture frames, and other small accessories. Decorative bookends are functional and beautiful at the same time. The key is to create a pleasing look, that doesn’t look “decorated”.

20 Throw Pillows For Your Coastal Home

We are always talking pillows, and as in our previous blog posts,  adding new throw pillows to a room is one of the easiest ways to freshen up your decor. The Pineapple Girls love throw pillows and there are so many options for your coastal inspired home.

We love belgian linen, ikat and personalized pillows in fresh, crisp fabrics. We also think throw pillows should be luxuriously overstuffed…life is too short!  Slipcovered pillows make them very easy to clean and swap out with the season.

Here are a few of our favorites:

We love her collection  of coral bottles. All are handmade with natural sea life, geode stones and crystals. Each bottle is unique in appearance and will vary slightly in character, size, color, etc. No two are alike, these pieces are truly one-of-a-kind!whtcrystalfloat

Created in her Los Angeles studio, Jamie’s work has been featured in magazines like InStyle, House Beautiful, Elle Decor and Architectural Digest. Her love for the recycled and vintage is showcased in every unique piece.

5 Ways To Update Your Coastal Inspired Home For The Season

January makes us think of renewal and a fresh start. While full-scale home renovations are fun, sometimes even small changes can make your home feel new.  Here are a few of our favorite ways to update your beach house without breaking the bank:

1Throw Pillows. Adding new pillows to your sofas and chairs is a tried and true way to freshen up your decor! The Pineapple Girls love luxurious, overstuffed pillows like the ones below that were designed by John Robshaw.

Add a piece of artwork.  The right piece of art can transform a space.  We love a crisp, white room…but art can add a nice pop of color. Art can also show personality and spark fun conversation!

3Add a statement chandelier.  With so many beautiful options for lighting, a beaded or rope chandelier can add a subtle, modern coastal touch to classic decor.

4Update your rugs.  Switching out your area rugs is a simple and powerful way to add texture and layers to a space. Rugs are also a great way to cover up wear and tear on your flooring until you are able to replace the floors.

Lamps For Your Coastal Home

Lighting is a very important element in any room, and choosing the right table lamps help set the tone for your space.  Your table lamps can be works of art, creating not only lighting, but a design element in your home.

Lamps can add elegance, drama or create a casual feel, depending on their shape, size and composition of materials used in the base, as well as the shade.  For example, a clear crystal lamp base, with a white linen shade add a touch of elegance and formality to the space, while a ceramic base lamp with a textured or woven shade make the room feel more relaxed. Our driftwood and metal lamp below becomes a focal point suggesting a modern, organic and coastal lifestyle.  These are just some of the roles your lighting plays in your home, and that is why we suggest carefully selecting your lamps that will reflect the personality and style you desire.

Many of our lamps have organic, natural bases, utilizing materials like agate, driftwood and coral, which work well in transitional, modern or coastal homes.

How To Choose Artwork For Your Coastal Home

Art is a great way to express yourself and give a space personality. The right piece of artwork can transform a space. When choosing a piece of art for your home, think about the following:

  1. Mood: Think about what mood you want to create. Perhaps you want a relaxing and comfortable space, something more sophisticated, or a buttoned-up, formal look.
  2. Space: What look do you want?  Transitional? Something modern? Or coastal and clean?
  3. Location: Look at your walls and furniture and decide where the art will be placed. Popular locations for artwork are over a sofa, bed or console. Think about whether you want one large piece of art or a grouping of smaller pieces.

When choosing artwork for your home, think about what style you want to achieve. Do you like landscapes, abstract or soft watercolors?  Photography, shadowbox art or paintings? For a coastal look, consider using art that features organic, natural elements like the art in the photo below.

The Pineapple Girls love using whites, blues and seaglass hues in the coastal homes we design. Crisp, white slipcovered furniture and white accessories can act as great canvas, and art is placed to add some color.

Finally, when hanging your art, make sure to hang it in a comfortable spot, where the art is eye-level. One of the biggest mistakes people make when hanging art is to hang it too high. A general rule is to hang the art so that the middle of the piece is at 57″ high.

Decorating With Trays

The Pineapple Girls love trays. They are functional, and great for organizing personal objects but can also add a nice pop of color and style to a space.

There are so many options for tray decor. We love them on a coffee table, a bedside table or even in your foyer by the entrance to your home.  A great way to reduce clutter, trays are perfect for storing magazines, keys and small decorative objects.

aerin-lifestyle-framesUtilizing an ottoman instead of a coffee table is very popular, but where do you put your drink?  A beautiful tray does the trick!

Trays can also be used for serving at a casual or formal gathering. A stylish tray can can serve as a quick and portable bar, just by adding some cute beverage napkins, a bottle of wine and cocktail glasses.

We adore these printed trays by one of our favorite brands, AERIN.  Aerin Lauder is a granddaughter of Estée Lauder. Aerin spent 25 years working for the family beauty business before introducing Aerin, her own beauty, home and luxury lifestyle label, in 2012. Her products are true luxury, and we love having them as part of our collection.

We are also in love with these easily customizable lucite trays. We’ve added a custom fabric to create a design element in the photo below. You can also proudly display your favorite photo. It’s so easy to change your photo, fabric or wallpaper anytime! To change the photo, fabric or wallpaper just separate second backing from magnets.

How To Create A Beautiful Centerpiece For Your Fall Gathering

In Florida, we love embracing the Fall season in a coastal and sophisticated way. Fall decor does not have to go in an obvious direction, utilizing only an orange palette. The Pineapple Girls adore the simplicity and elegance of white pumpkins.  To create a beautiful centerpiece, pair a few white pumpkins with an organic bowl and some fresh flowers. A white antler adds a modern touch.

blog1

We love using natural elements in home decor, and bringing the outdoors inside is a great trend for Fall. The Palecek River Stick Lanterns below are composed of assorted natural driftwood, and were hand-formed into a hurricane with a glass insert. We love the organic look, and how the air bubbles, swirls and discoloration in the glass is part of the natural beauty of the hand-blown recycled glass.

Here’s a handy how-to-guide for creating a beautiful centerpiece for your Fall gathering. Happy Fall from the Pineapple Girls!
