Outdoor Entertaining Essentials

With beautiful weather and summertime right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about outdoor entertaining! Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a small balcony, plenty of ways exist to create a beautiful and functional outdoor space for hosting guests. At The Pineapple Girls, we believe every outdoor entertaining space should be both stylish and practical. In this blog post, we’ll be sharing our top outdoor entertaining essentials, from furniture to decor to dining pieces.

1. FABULOUS FURNITURE FINDS

The right outdoor furniture can transform your space into a comfortable and inviting oasis. When choosing outdoor furniture, consider the size of your space and the number of guests you’ll be hosting. If you have a larger space, a sectional or outdoor sofa can provide ample seating. Our Cabana Collection offers style and outdoor-grade quality with its marine-grade birch wood frame & 100% acrylic Sunbrella fabric slipcover that is durable and washable.

For a smaller space, opt for chairs and a small table. Our Newport Barrel Chair is timeless and beautiful. Handwoven in UV-resistant N-dura™ resin wicker for long-lasting enjoyment! This chair pairs perfectly with the Newport Ottoman or one of our new favorites, the Devante Accent Table. This petite table is made for outdoor entertaining, handcrafted from twisted faux wicker and built to withstand varied elements and temperatures. The perfect choice for drinks on the patio or by the pool!

2. decorative accents

Adding outdoor decor can instantly elevate your entertaining space. Think about incorporating outdoor rugs, lanterns, and throw pillows in coordinating colors and patterns. The Pineapple Girls are pleased to offer NEW outdoor pillows by John Robshaw to our in-store and online collection.

These beautiful prints are resistant to both sun and rain for long-lasting use in your outdoor space. Another great option for eye-catching designs and whimsical patterns is our Gray Malin Outdoor Pillows. For decorative accessories to style in your covered outdoor sitting area, we recommend our rattan lanterns both a part of our last-chance sale. For a functional touch, consider installing a chandelier in your space. Our designers love to use the Denison Lantern in covered patios, made from a hammered wrought-iron fixture and available in small, medium, or large.

3. Al Fresco Feasting

When it comes to outdoor dining, it’s important to have the right pieces for both functionality and style. Melamine or acrylic dishes are great options for outdoor dining as they are lightweight and durable. Our Mario Luca Giusti Lente highballs and tumblers offer a truly unique look and are made from unbreakable crystal clear acrylic, perfect for entertaining around the pool. Also available in a large Salad Bowl or set of 6 snack bowls.

Mario Luca Giusti Lente

Melamine dinnerware is another popular choice as it is lightweight and easy to clean, making it ideal for picnics or backyard barbecues. Shown below is our popular Bamboo Chip & Dip Bowl, Blue Bamboo Dinner Plates (Set of 4), and Green Bamboo Lunch Plates (Set of 6).

For those looking for a more classic and versatile option, our ocean blue or crisp white enamel plates are the ideal choice for outdoor dining. Made from high-quality materials, these plates can withstand extreme heat and are great for use outdoors or indoors. They are perfect for casual gatherings or elegant outdoor dinner parties.

Creating a beautiful and functional outdoor entertaining space is all about choosing the right pieces. At The Pineapple Girls, we believe that outdoor furniture, decor, and dining pieces can all work together to create an inviting and stylish space. With these essentials, you’ll be well on your way to hosting the ultimate outdoor soirée.

7 Interior Design Tips For Your Home

Photo: Brantley Photography | Design: Pineapples Design Group

We all strive to have beautiful homes inspired by the design photo we saw on social media. However, without the help of a professional interior designer, it can be difficult to have success recreating this look in our own homes. That’s why The Pineapple Girls have compiled this list of our favorite design trends (and trends to avoid) in your own home.

Tap into your inner designer with these 7 Interior Design Tips for your home!

1. TRENDING COLORS

While printed fabrics and bold colors look amazing, skip on using these trending styles when selecting large furniture pieces. Choose simple colors or patterns for a timeless look and save the unique colors and designs for pillows or small accessories.

Shop Throw Pillows

2. PAY ATTENTION TO SCALE

Pay attention to the scale of your furniture. Your home may not look how you envisioned it because your furniture is the wrong size for the space. Avoid using bulky, oversized pieces in a smaller room even if it fits. The same is true with the opposite. Small furniture can look lost in a larger space with vaulted ceilings.

3. INVEST IN QUALITY FURNITURE

When shopping for new furniture, choose high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Inspect the quality of materials and construction. Choose craftsmanship that is a good value for your money and able to withstand the conditions of your home.

4. MIX ANTIQUES

While modern furniture can be stylish, mixing in antiques will give your home a collected feel. Many make the mistake of hyper-focusing on trending design when the truth is homes can be an eclectic mix of traditional and modern styles. We now offer antique furniture pieces in our Jupiter, FL store. Be sure to stop in next time you are in town!

5. USE SYMMETRY

The use of symmetry in interior design is an easy way to elevate your home’s style. The best part is you can most likely do this right now using the accessories already in your home. You can achieve this look by having a focal point and then the same visual weight on either side. We often do this with artwork and a pair of table lamps or artwork and matching sconces.

Below are 2 beautiful examples of symmetry in the home.

6. PAY ATTENTION TO HEIGHT

Continuing on with the artwork in your home, it is important to pay attention to the height of your art or mirror. It can be easy to hang pieces too high or too low. Even in a home with vaulted ceilings, placing your art at a comfortable eye-level is best.

Shop our collection of coastal, nautical, and ocean-inspired artwork here.

7. THINK OF YOUR HOME AS A WHOLE

Lastly, remember to think of your home as a whole when designing. Although separate rooms, each space should flow seamlessly together. You can achieve this by using the same paint color on trim or moldings throughout the house or by carrying the same flooring throughout any open spaces.

Choosing The Best Living Room Furniture

How To Style A Console

One of our favorite pieces of furniture is the console.  It’s functional, versatile, and fun to style! Consoles are traditionally used in entryways, but work well in many other spaces. We love them in family rooms (under a mounted tv), behind sofas, in dining rooms, playrooms and even bedrooms.

console

The first thing to consider when choosing a console is the style you are going for in the space. Think about whether you want something modern, coastal or transitional. The Pineapple Girls have many favorites, from Coastal Fresh to Modern Organic …a console made of natural materials is truly something special.

inspire3

There are a wide variety of styles and finishes for consoles. Some have shelves or drawers for storage, and others are open underneath, leaving the perfect spot for poufs or ottomans that can be pulled out for extra seating.   Consoles are made with many different materials, such as wood, lacquer, reclaimed wood, textured lacquer,  or metal and glass.

To style a console, first think about what will go on the wall above it.  Some great art or a mirror works well here.  Don’t hang the piece too high.  It should be hung 4″-6″ above the console.

inspire5

Next, add a great pair of matching table lamps on either side.  There are so many great options for lighting today, so try going out of your comfort zone and choose some fun lamps that will make a statement in the room.

Between the lamps, you can add a low bowl, picture frames, a decorative box or a sculpture. Choose smaller items that scale with the lamps.  When choosing your decorative objects, keep it simple and classic.  You don’t want the console to be overly cluttered.

pineapplespalms7

A few final tips: think about balance and symmetry when styling your console. Experiment with a few different looks and don’t be afraid to switch it up when you are ready for a change.

5 Ways To Update Your Coastal Inspired Home For The Season

January makes us think of renewal and a fresh start. While full-scale home renovations are fun, sometimes even small changes can make your home feel new.  Here are a few of our favorite ways to update your beach house without breaking the bank:

1Throw Pillows. Adding new pillows to your sofas and chairs is a tried and true way to freshen up your decor! The Pineapple Girls love luxurious, overstuffed pillows like the ones below that were designed by John Robshaw.

Add a piece of artwork.  The right piece of art can transform a space.  We love a crisp, white room…but art can add a nice pop of color. Art can also show personality and spark fun conversation!

3Add a statement chandelier.  With so many beautiful options for lighting, a beaded or rope chandelier can add a subtle, modern coastal touch to classic decor.

4Update your rugs.  Switching out your area rugs is a simple and powerful way to add texture and layers to a space. Rugs are also a great way to cover up wear and tear on your flooring until you are able to replace the floors.

Kid-Friendly Coastal Home Decor

A house really isn’t a home unless it’s a welcoming space for children and grandchildren.

But can you create (and maintain) crisp, clean interiors while keeping the needs of kids in mind?

Absolutely.

By its very nature, coastal-inspired design evokes feelings of relaxation and connection, comfort and convenience — weekends at the beach, reunions at the shore, an easy, breezy lifestyle regardless of the street address.

From its preferred hardwood or tile floors to its unfussy window treatments, coastal style is well-suited to the youngest members of your family tribe. For proof, check out the glorious “Living with Kids” posts on DesignMom.com, where many of the featured, family-friendly homes are located on or near the water.

Want to make your beach-chic retreat more inviting to children? Dip a toe into these tips:

Coastal-style floor coverings for busy families: Think cleanable

Natural-fiber rugs like those woven of jute, sisal and hemp are a natural fit under feet, whether they’re sandy or not, but cleaning sisal of spills can be a nightmare.

For those areas of your home that are either high-traffic or near a highchair, indoor/outdoor area rugs offer a fashionable, functional solution. They add warmth and texture to a room, as well as a softer spot for kids to play (and land).

Sturdy enough for patios and verandas but pretty enough for dens and casual dining rooms, Dash & Albert indoor/outdoor rugs are a Pineapple Girl favorite. Available in African-inspired geometric, vintage tile and classic stripe patterns, these lightweight, reversible, indoor/outdoor rugs can be vacuumed, lightly brushed with water or even sprayed clean with a hose.

Thanks to slipcovers, the Juno Beach sectional is a great option for families with children.

Kid-friendly coastal furniture? Invest in quality

It may seem counterintuitive, but until your kids grow out of their “the floor is hot lava” phase, investing in high-quality furniture will save money in the long run. Unlike cheap pieces, heavy, solid furnishings will stand up to years of abuse. As a safety measure, opt for furniture with soft, rounded corners when possible.

Another family-friendly furniture solution is woven strongly into the coastal chic aesthetic — slipcovers, a look that derived from the tradition of draping sheets over beach-cottage furniture at summer’s end.

Thanks to slipcovers, your family can enjoy a stunning white sectional – just machine-wash fabric as necessary, and replace when you’re ready for a change.

coastal design kid friendly homework table
Kids need and want spaces near you to color, do crafts or complete homework.

Make space for kids’ activities in your coastal home

Kids need dedicated spaces to do kid things – from homework to art work, from board games to video games:

  • Set up a study station in the kitchen so kids can tackle schoolwork where Mom and Dad are close at hand. Keep the area neat with clear glass jars to hold pens and pencils, scissors and rulers.
  • Create a kid-friendly mudroom near the back door by positioning a bench, baskets and hooks there. Kids will have a place to prepare for whatever activity they’re engaged in – ice hockey, beach volleyball, snowboarding or soccer.
  • Anchor your family room with a large, low coffee table made of reclaimed pine. Kids can gather their friends around the table for coloring and crafts, and the whole family can convene there on game night.

Got kids? You need smart storage solutions

One of the signatures of coastal design is, of course, a clean, uncluttered look.

Savvy storage is a must, but built-in bookcases, window-seat storage benches and shelves lined with plastic bins are only the beginning.

Wicker and Nantucket-style baskets, stiff canvas hampers and rustic crates tucked around the house serve as catchalls for toys that are handy, portable and nautical in nature.

coastal design kid friendly julie dietrich coral bottle
Decorative pieces like Julie Dietrich’s coral bottles can find a place in your family home.

Beach chic décor is naturally kid-friendly

So many of the finishing touches you typically find in an ocean lover’s home are hardy enough to withstand occasional handling by kids:

  • Dramatic pieces of driftwood
  • Gorgeous, oversized conch shells
  • Coral sculptures and centerpieces
  • Exotic sea fans
  • Purple barnacle clusters

Those found (or purchased!) objects not only serve as eye-catching seaside accents, but they also bring the outdoors in and can serve as a teaching tool.

For more delicate pieces, like Jamie Dietrich’s dazzling, one-of-a-kind bottles and vintage floats, simply follow the 45-inch rule: display the item at least 45 inches off the floor, to keep it beyond the reach of little hands.

How to Freshen up Any Room

Instead of major renovations to give a room a new, revitalized look, try freshening the room with something simpler. This is a great way to give a space of the home a makeover, without the toil and grief of major refurbishments. Often times, simple strategies are the most effective at making the room completely different, yet still comfortable.

Some ways that you can freshen up any room include:

Fresh Paint

Benjamin Moore Simply White

Giving your interiors a fresh coat of paint can go a long way in augmenting and transforming any space in the home. Look for natural, organic colors that reflect the beauty of the surrounding sea. Benjamin Moore’s Simply White is a great option that will make your room look fresh and new. Paint your ceilings in the same light color to make the space appear taller and larger.

Pillows

how to freshen up your home

In addition to paint, another inexpensive way to freshen up a room is with pillows. These can be used as accent pieces and will add a little pop to your room, especially if larger pieces of furniture are not in the budget.

Natural Floor Coverings

Natural Jute Woven Rug

Feel the Rug under your feet; is it comfortable and cohesive with your room? Try using natural colors to bring a clean, contemporary style to the space. For instance, the Natural Jute Woven Rug is a simple yet sophisticated way to revitalize any room. The nubby texture provides depth and interest, while the natural materials provide just the right comfort underfoot.

Updated Furniture

slipcovered sectional

Treat yourself to a new piece of furniture to give your space a fresh face. A new sofa, chair, or cocktail table can inspire a theme or color palette for the room; update a quality piece of furniture that reflects your natural surroundings and that coordinates with your style vision. Add a light-colored sofa or the above-pictured Nantucket Sectional to a family space, or bring a unique and vibrant occasional chair to your bedroom for a pop of color.

Freshen Up Your Home

Whether your space is a simple studio or a stunning house by the sea, you can freshen up any room with these three suggestions. Find cohesive and coordinating furnishings, fixtures, and accents to bring your style inspirations to fruition.  Try these simple strategies and give your home a fresh face for the coming season.

Fall Decorating Ideas for Coastal Living

If you have embraced a coastal way of living, your home likely reflects the clean, crisp feel of a chic, or casual design style. Each element in your home, from teak furnishings to cotton furniture slipcovers, contributes to the light, airy feeling that coastal living embodies. With fall approaching, you need only make minor tweaks to your current scheme to transition to cooler weather.

Some fall decorating tips for your coastal lifestyle include:

Get Cozy at the Beach with Throws & Pillows

coastal throws and pillows

A useful accent for your fall design schemes might include lots of cotton or throws and pillows to keep the autumnal chill away. Look for vibrant blues, clean whites, and patterned variations that integrate the colors of your coastal-inspired home.  Carry the blue hues throughout your scheme with a cotton Brahms Mount throw in soft white & shore colors. Check out textured throws to add warmth and visual interest to these simple accent items; mix and match patterned pillows to give your room a fun, but pulled together designer look.  These are perfect to drag down to the beach for an evening bonfire this fall, too!

Bring the Outside in with Awesome Porch Decor

porch decor

Bring the outside in with awesome porch and patio décor, and use lanterns to create a cozy, comfortable outside living space.  These bring just the right amount of ambiance to the exterior spaces that you enjoy spending time in. This gives you the opportunity to implement, oversized pillows, and linens that meld with the look of your coastal surroundings, while also embracing the crisp, modern look of a contemporary coastal home. Weathered teak wood is a natural choice for a porch, patio, or lanai, and it complements marine blue, linen white, and navy perfectly. Be sure to choose fixtures and accents that can hold up to the chill of fall, and that will keep you comfortable during this cooler time of the year.

Accessorize Seating Areas with Coastal Decor

coastal decor accessories

Often times, it is the simple things that create the mood and atmosphere of your room so accessorize accordingly. It is easy to get carried away with accents, but keeping the space a bit sparse can lend to the airy, sophisticated designs that work great on the coast, but also in other regions, when looking for a casual, crisp, and comfortable space. Use color and texture to convey a coastal vibe in a chic way, and to warm up the space during cooler months. Take the opportunity to extend your look through the necessary features of the space, such as the floor coverings, window treatments, and furnishings. Look for clean lines and natural materials to recreate a design that is as functional as it is stylish.

There is plenty of Power in Flowers

coastal occasional chairs

Fresh plants and flowers have the ability to brighten up any area and add a bit of life to your space. Use the vessel or planter to echo the color scheme of your coastal-inspired space, and look for plants that promise to thrive and bloom in the autumnal weather. Even a simple ivy or orchid provide oxygen and a healthy accent to the home, giving it a summery touch year-round. Try bringing your outdoor plants indoors during cooler seasons, but don’t overwhelm the interiors with foliage that will require a lot of sun and that could crowd or obscure the natural light coming in through the windows.

Slide a Coastal Slip Cover Over Your Favorite Nook Chairs

coastal slipcovered chairs

Slide a colorful cotton or linen slipcover over your favorite nook chairs to transform them from simple seating implements to coordinating fixtures of your coastal lifestyle. This is a simple fix for mismatched furnishings or second-hand finds, and also ensures you will always have ample seating for entertaining and guests at a moment’s notice.
