7 Interior Design Tips For Your Home

Photo: Brantley Photography | Design: Pineapples Design Group

We all strive to have beautiful homes inspired by the design photo we saw on social media. However, without the help of a professional interior designer, it can be difficult to have success recreating this look in our own homes. That’s why The Pineapple Girls have compiled this list of our favorite design trends (and trends to avoid) in your own home.

Tap into your inner designer with these 7 Interior Design Tips for your home!

1. TRENDING COLORS

While printed fabrics and bold colors look amazing, skip on using these trending styles when selecting large furniture pieces. Choose simple colors or patterns for a timeless look and save the unique colors and designs for pillows or small accessories.

2. PAY ATTENTION TO SCALE

Pay attention to the scale of your furniture. Your home may not look how you envisioned it because your furniture is the wrong size for the space. Avoid using bulky, oversized pieces in a smaller room even if it fits. The same is true with the opposite. Small furniture can look lost in a larger space with vaulted ceilings.

3. INVEST IN QUALITY FURNITURE

When shopping for new furniture, choose high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Inspect the quality of materials and construction. Choose craftsmanship that is a good value for your money and able to withstand the conditions of your home.

4. MIX ANTIQUES

While modern furniture can be stylish, mixing in antiques will give your home a collected feel. Many make the mistake of hyper-focusing on trending design when the truth is homes can be an eclectic mix of traditional and modern styles. We now offer antique furniture pieces in our Jupiter, FL store. Be sure to stop in next time you are in town!

5. USE SYMMETRY

The use of symmetry in interior design is an easy way to elevate your home’s style. The best part is you can most likely do this right now using the accessories already in your home. You can achieve this look by having a focal point and then the same visual weight on either side. We often do this with artwork and a pair of table lamps or artwork and matching sconces.

Below are 2 beautiful examples of symmetry in the home.

6. PAY ATTENTION TO HEIGHT

Continuing on with the artwork in your home, it is important to pay attention to the height of your art or mirror. It can be easy to hang pieces too high or too low. Even in a home with vaulted ceilings, placing your art at a comfortable eye-level is best.

Shop our collection of coastal, nautical, and ocean-inspired artwork here.

7. THINK OF YOUR HOME AS A WHOLE

Lastly, remember to think of your home as a whole when designing. Although separate rooms, each space should flow seamlessly together. You can achieve this by using the same paint color on trim or moldings throughout the house or by carrying the same flooring throughout any open spaces.

Highlights From 2017

Thanks to our loyal customers at Pineapples, Palms, Etc.,  2017 was truly a great year for us! We were honored to be featured in many publications, including a Nationwide 10-page feature in Traditional Home magazine, highlighting our design work and products. Blue and White was strong in 2017, and we still love the classic combination! Our coordinates glasses were one of our best selling gifts of the year. E-Design services were very popular, and we made many new friends from around the country, and were honored they trusted us to help them create their dream homes from a distance.

Coordinates Glasses

Coordinates Glasses were definitely one of our hottest gifts of 2017! Our popular stemless wines are now available in Riedel crystal. In addition, we offer On the Rocks and Beer Pilsner glasses which can be customized with the exact coordinates of a home, boat or favorite vacation spot! Perfect for a wedding gift, housewarming or any special occasion.

Blue + White

The Pineapple Girls love every shade of blue, but this crisp navy and white bedroom, created by our design team, was one of our most popular photos on social media last year.

E-Design

2017 was a busy year for our e-design services! We have been working with clients all over the country by choosing art for their homes, accessorizing their shelves and tables, selecting perfect furniture, space planning and more. While it may sound difficult to design virtually, it is actually a fun and effective way to work with us. We just need a little information about you to begin the process of creating your dream home.

Happy New Year from The Pineapple Girls!

Blue, White and Gold

Blue and white will always be classic yet current, and it’s one of the Pineapple Girl’s favorite color combos.   It’s perfect for an ocean inspired room.  In the photo below, the touches of gold add a modern vibe and keep the look current.  A little bling is never a bad thing, right?

blog post.jpgUsing the white slipcovered sofas and white shiplap walls as our canvas, we added complimentary blues in a variety of patterns and textures.  The pops of gold really make the room! The key is to add just enough gold to make a statement…don’t go overboard.

Anatomy of a Cozy Bedroom Design

A bedroom should be your sanctuary.  A place to relax and unwind! We love this modern coastal master suite that was created by the Pineapples, Palms, Etc. Design Team.

The soft palette and modern design with classic touches creates a soothing vibe.  We love the color palette: seaglass and  crisp white.  The fabric for the drapery, pillows and upholstered bench reflect different shades of seaglass, in both solids and patterns.

For nightstands, the pineapple girls like to use a chest.  It adds practicality with additional storage and works well to scale with the larger upholstered beds that have become so popular.

A modern writing desk is a perfect desk size for a bedroom and adding a luxurious seating area is a great spot for reading or enjoying the view.

A chandelier in the bedroom can create a peaceful ambiance with a touch of luxury.

One of the reasons people love hotel suites is that there is no clutter…try to keep your master bedroom free of clutter to achieve this effect.

20 Throw Pillows For Your Coastal Home

We are always talking pillows, and as in our previous blog posts,  adding new throw pillows to a room is one of the easiest ways to freshen up your decor. The Pineapple Girls love throw pillows and there are so many options for your coastal inspired home.

We love belgian linen, ikat and personalized pillows in fresh, crisp fabrics. We also think throw pillows should be luxuriously overstuffed…life is too short!  Slipcovered pillows make them very easy to clean and swap out with the season.

Here are a few of our favorites:

How To Choose Artwork For Your Coastal Home

Art is a great way to express yourself and give a space personality. The right piece of artwork can transform a space. When choosing a piece of art for your home, think about the following:

  1. Mood: Think about what mood you want to create. Perhaps you want a relaxing and comfortable space, something more sophisticated, or a buttoned-up, formal look.
  2. Space: What look do you want?  Transitional? Something modern? Or coastal and clean?
  3. Location: Look at your walls and furniture and decide where the art will be placed. Popular locations for artwork are over a sofa, bed or console. Think about whether you want one large piece of art or a grouping of smaller pieces.

When choosing artwork for your home, think about what style you want to achieve. Do you like landscapes, abstract or soft watercolors?  Photography, shadowbox art or paintings? For a coastal look, consider using art that features organic, natural elements like the art in the photo below.

The Pineapple Girls love using whites, blues and seaglass hues in the coastal homes we design. Crisp, white slipcovered furniture and white accessories can act as great canvas, and art is placed to add some color.

Finally, when hanging your art, make sure to hang it in a comfortable spot, where the art is eye-level. One of the biggest mistakes people make when hanging art is to hang it too high. A general rule is to hang the art so that the middle of the piece is at 57″ high.

Decorating With Trays

The Pineapple Girls love trays. They are functional, and great for organizing personal objects but can also add a nice pop of color and style to a space.

There are so many options for tray decor. We love them on a coffee table, a bedside table or even in your foyer by the entrance to your home.  A great way to reduce clutter, trays are perfect for storing magazines, keys and small decorative objects.

aerin-lifestyle-framesUtilizing an ottoman instead of a coffee table is very popular, but where do you put your drink?  A beautiful tray does the trick!

Trays can also be used for serving at a casual or formal gathering. A stylish tray can can serve as a quick and portable bar, just by adding some cute beverage napkins, a bottle of wine and cocktail glasses.

We adore these printed trays by one of our favorite brands, AERIN.  Aerin Lauder is a granddaughter of Estée Lauder. Aerin spent 25 years working for the family beauty business before introducing Aerin, her own beauty, home and luxury lifestyle label, in 2012. Her products are true luxury, and we love having them as part of our collection.

We are also in love with these easily customizable lucite trays. We’ve added a custom fabric to create a design element in the photo below. You can also proudly display your favorite photo. It’s so easy to change your photo, fabric or wallpaper anytime! To change the photo, fabric or wallpaper just separate second backing from magnets.

Kid-Friendly Coastal Home Decor

A house really isn’t a home unless it’s a welcoming space for children and grandchildren.

But can you create (and maintain) crisp, clean interiors while keeping the needs of kids in mind?

Absolutely.

By its very nature, coastal-inspired design evokes feelings of relaxation and connection, comfort and convenience — weekends at the beach, reunions at the shore, an easy, breezy lifestyle regardless of the street address.

From its preferred hardwood or tile floors to its unfussy window treatments, coastal style is well-suited to the youngest members of your family tribe. For proof, check out the glorious “Living with Kids” posts on DesignMom.com, where many of the featured, family-friendly homes are located on or near the water.

Want to make your beach-chic retreat more inviting to children? Dip a toe into these tips:

Coastal-style floor coverings for busy families: Think cleanable

Natural-fiber rugs like those woven of jute, sisal and hemp are a natural fit under feet, whether they’re sandy or not, but cleaning sisal of spills can be a nightmare.

For those areas of your home that are either high-traffic or near a highchair, indoor/outdoor area rugs offer a fashionable, functional solution. They add warmth and texture to a room, as well as a softer spot for kids to play (and land).

Sturdy enough for patios and verandas but pretty enough for dens and casual dining rooms, Dash & Albert indoor/outdoor rugs are a Pineapple Girl favorite. Available in African-inspired geometric, vintage tile and classic stripe patterns, these lightweight, reversible, indoor/outdoor rugs can be vacuumed, lightly brushed with water or even sprayed clean with a hose.

Thanks to slipcovers, the Juno Beach sectional is a great option for families with children.

Kid-friendly coastal furniture? Invest in quality

It may seem counterintuitive, but until your kids grow out of their “the floor is hot lava” phase, investing in high-quality furniture will save money in the long run. Unlike cheap pieces, heavy, solid furnishings will stand up to years of abuse. As a safety measure, opt for furniture with soft, rounded corners when possible.

Another family-friendly furniture solution is woven strongly into the coastal chic aesthetic — slipcovers, a look that derived from the tradition of draping sheets over beach-cottage furniture at summer’s end.

Thanks to slipcovers, your family can enjoy a stunning white sectional – just machine-wash fabric as necessary, and replace when you’re ready for a change.

coastal design kid friendly homework table
Kids need and want spaces near you to color, do crafts or complete homework.

Make space for kids’ activities in your coastal home

Kids need dedicated spaces to do kid things – from homework to art work, from board games to video games:

  • Set up a study station in the kitchen so kids can tackle schoolwork where Mom and Dad are close at hand. Keep the area neat with clear glass jars to hold pens and pencils, scissors and rulers.
  • Create a kid-friendly mudroom near the back door by positioning a bench, baskets and hooks there. Kids will have a place to prepare for whatever activity they’re engaged in – ice hockey, beach volleyball, snowboarding or soccer.
  • Anchor your family room with a large, low coffee table made of reclaimed pine. Kids can gather their friends around the table for coloring and crafts, and the whole family can convene there on game night.

Got kids? You need smart storage solutions

One of the signatures of coastal design is, of course, a clean, uncluttered look.

Savvy storage is a must, but built-in bookcases, window-seat storage benches and shelves lined with plastic bins are only the beginning.

Wicker and Nantucket-style baskets, stiff canvas hampers and rustic crates tucked around the house serve as catchalls for toys that are handy, portable and nautical in nature.

coastal design kid friendly julie dietrich coral bottle
Decorative pieces like Julie Dietrich’s coral bottles can find a place in your family home.

Beach chic décor is naturally kid-friendly

So many of the finishing touches you typically find in an ocean lover’s home are hardy enough to withstand occasional handling by kids:

  • Dramatic pieces of driftwood
  • Gorgeous, oversized conch shells
  • Coral sculptures and centerpieces
  • Exotic sea fans
  • Purple barnacle clusters

Those found (or purchased!) objects not only serve as eye-catching seaside accents, but they also bring the outdoors in and can serve as a teaching tool.

For more delicate pieces, like Jamie Dietrich’s dazzling, one-of-a-kind bottles and vintage floats, simply follow the 45-inch rule: display the item at least 45 inches off the floor, to keep it beyond the reach of little hands.
