Cottage on Cabot

We were so honored to have this recent design project featured in the latest issue of Cottages & Bungalows magazine!

Cottage on Cabot is actually the home of top Pineapple Girl, Lisa Peterson. She is an interior designer and the co-owner of Pineapples, Palms, Etc.

Lisa has always dreamed of living in a comfortable, relaxed, Florida Cracker style cottage, with views and breezes from the water that create her “Barefoot Dream” lifestyle.

“Cottage on Cabot” was built with the true Florida Cracker architecture of the past, and blends perfectly with its historic surroundings. Cracker architecture was used widely in the 19th century in Florida. Florida cracker homes are characterized by metal roofs, wrap around porches, long and straight central hallways from the front to the back of the home. Peterson loved this concept so she incorporated many windows and doors that open onto the large deck, allowing the constant ocean breeze to fill the house.

Here is the layout from Cottages and Bungalows. They did such a beautiful job!

Blue, White and Gold

Blue and white will always be classic yet current, and it’s one of the Pineapple Girl’s favorite color combos.   It’s perfect for an ocean inspired room.  In the photo below, the touches of gold add a modern vibe and keep the look current.  A little bling is never a bad thing, right?

blog post.jpgUsing the white slipcovered sofas and white shiplap walls as our canvas, we added complimentary blues in a variety of patterns and textures.  The pops of gold really make the room! The key is to add just enough gold to make a statement…don’t go overboard.

Modern Coastal Easter Decor

Easter is right around the corner!  The Pineapple Girls love using modern coastal elements to add a fun and interesting twist to the traditional ways of decorating and displaying Easter eggs.

We were looking for ways to style a coffee table for an upcoming Easter gathering and decided to use these new white rope lanterns that just came in to the store. We love the coastal look of these lanterns, which can be used to hold candles…or even Easter Eggs!

Here is a quick and easy tutorial for how to use the lanterns to create a stylish coffee table for Easter:

Happy Easter from The Pineapple Girls!

20 Throw Pillows For Your Coastal Home

We are always talking pillows, and as in our previous blog posts,  adding new throw pillows to a room is one of the easiest ways to freshen up your decor. The Pineapple Girls love throw pillows and there are so many options for your coastal inspired home.

We love belgian linen, ikat and personalized pillows in fresh, crisp fabrics. We also think throw pillows should be luxuriously overstuffed…life is too short!  Slipcovered pillows make them very easy to clean and swap out with the season.

Here are a few of our favorites:

How To Mix and Match Fabrics In Your Coastal Home

When choosing decor for a space, fabric is a key element. It’s important to find the right combination for your drapery, furniture and pillows. Many people are intimidated by the different options and unsure how to coordinate different patterns together. We think choosing fabric should be a fun experience! Once you know a few tricks, you can mix and match like a pro.

First, choose your color palette. If it’s blues, multiple tones are a great choice, this gives you more options when selecting accessories.

Typically you fall in love with a pattern within your palette, which is usually bold and becomes your “lead” fabric, from there you can choose less prominent coordinating patterns to pull it all together.

Stripes are always a good choice for your 2nd fabric, as they blend well with ikats, large patterns, small patterns, or just about everything.

The third fabric could be a solid.  If you use a pattern on your throw pillows, you might want a solid on your drapes.  If your sofa is solid, the throw pillows are a great place to add some patterns.

fullsizerender-28Think about mixing different textures and materials.  The Pineapple Girls love linen, linen/cotton blends, velvet and woven fabrics.  You can mix these materials in one room to add variety.

A good rule to remember is the rule of three.  More than three colors or patterns in a room can look busy.

A white, slipcovered sofa is a great canvas for adding patterned throw pillows in colorful fabrics.

Lamps For Your Coastal Home

Lighting is a very important element in any room, and choosing the right table lamps help set the tone for your space.  Your table lamps can be works of art, creating not only lighting, but a design element in your home.

Interior Design by Pineapples, Palms, Etc.

Lamps can add elegance, drama or create a casual feel, depending on their shape, size and composition of materials used in the base, as well as the shade.  For example, a clear crystal lamp base, with a white linen shade add a touch of elegance and formality to the space, while a ceramic base lamp with a textured or woven shade make the room feel more relaxed. Our driftwood and metal lamp below becomes a focal point suggesting a modern, organic and coastal lifestyle.  These are just some of the roles your lighting plays in your home, and that is why we suggest carefully selecting your lamps that will reflect the personality and style you desire.

Many of our lamps have organic, natural bases, utilizing materials like agate, driftwood and coral, which work well in transitional, modern or coastal homes.

How To Choose Artwork For Your Coastal Home

Art is a great way to express yourself and give a space personality. The right piece of artwork can transform a space. When choosing a piece of art for your home, think about the following:

  1. Mood: Think about what mood you want to create. Perhaps you want a relaxing and comfortable space, something more sophisticated, or a buttoned-up, formal look.
  2. Space: What look do you want?  Transitional? Something modern? Or coastal and clean?
  3. Location: Look at your walls and furniture and decide where the art will be placed. Popular locations for artwork are over a sofa, bed or console. Think about whether you want one large piece of art or a grouping of smaller pieces.

pineapples-palms-02

When choosing artwork for your home, think about what style you want to achieve. Do you like landscapes, abstract or soft watercolors?  Photography, shadowbox art or paintings? For a coastal look, consider using art that features organic, natural elements like the art in the photo below.

inspire3
The Pineapple Girls love using whites, blues and seaglass hues in the coastal homes we design. Crisp, white slipcovered furniture and white accessories can act as great canvas, and art is placed to add some color.

Finally, when hanging your art, make sure to hang it in a comfortable spot, where the art is eye-level. One of the biggest mistakes people make when hanging art is to hang it too high. A general rule is to hang the art so that the middle of the piece is at 57″ high.
