Grant Tankoos is the founder of Soundview Millwork, based in Darien, Connecticut. The company is dedicated to crafting “fine and custom wood products for land and sea.”
We love their appetizer boards, and they are extremely popular at Pineapples, Palms, Etc. The boards are completely customizable. Everything from the types of handles to the text or artwork on the board can be personalized. They can be used for cheese, appetizers, steaks or as traditional cutting boards.
Grant Tankoos launched the company in 2008. From the start, Tankoos, who loves boating wanted to “create a really great nautically inspired gift.”
Grant’s father came up with the idea to personalize the boards, and 90% of their products are customized.
The cutting boards are crafted out of American hard maple and Santos mahogany from South America.
All of the products are made in America. When they first started, they were making boards from scrap lumber in the garage of Tankoo’s dad, reclaiming oak and Maple from pallets and construction sites. The company takes great pride in the fact that all of their pieces are still hand made in the USA and stand behind their product 100%.
The finishing process and product preparation is unlike any other – each part and board is inspected through the many phases of the production and finishing process. They start with the finest American maple and Santos mahogany – both known for their durability and tight grain pattern. For the finishing process they first dampen the board, causing the grain pattern to raise. Once dried, they hand sand the boards and apply 3 coats of mineral oil to the boards, fully saturating the pores and protecting them from staining, moisture, bacteria, etc.
We love these boards and are proud to carry them as part of our collection at Pineapples, Palms, Etc.!
